Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu has said that roles in mainstream and commercial films are given to actresses based on their market value, popularity, connections and influence in the industry rather than their talent.
Taapsee Pannu, who is known for acting in films with difficult and unique themes, played the lead role in the 2023 film ‘Dinky’ opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
Although the box office performance of the film was relatively low compared to Shahrukh Khan’s earlier releases ‘Pathan’ and ‘Jawan’, ‘Dinky’ turned out to be the biggest commercial success of Taapsee Pannu’s career.
In a recent conversation, Taapsee Pannu said that despite working with Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Dinky’, she did not get opportunities to work in many mainstream films after that.
According to Taapsee, talent alone is not enough to get roles in films. All actors are interchangeable to some extent and the same character can be played by different actors in their own style.
The actress said that female roles in so-called mainstream and commercial films are often not important enough to be associated with a particular actress. According to him, any actress can be chosen to play such a role.
Taapsee Pannu said that the basis of getting these roles is not your talent but your marketability, marketability, connections, popularity, presence and influence. All these factors are more important than the talent of an actor.
She admitted that in terms of these factors, she considers herself behind compared to other actresses. The only basis for him to get a film is his talent.
The actress credited director Rajkumar Hirani for her casting in Dinky, saying that Hirani cast her in the film after seeing her work and was firm on her choice.
He said that there are very few mainstream films where an actress is chosen solely on the basis of her talent, while directors like Rajkumar Hirani, who are completely confident in casting a particular actress for a role, are even fewer.
Taapsee Pannu’s latest film is ‘Gandhari’, the story of which revolves around a mother who goes to great lengths to find and save her kidnapped daughter. The film deals with themes of revenge and redemption, however, ‘Gandhari’ received mixed reviews from critics and audiences.
