The US is considering a major reduction in its troops stationed in Europe.

In a report published by Arab media citing American sources, one proposal involves the withdrawal of about a third of the troops from Europe, or more than 25,000, while a more drastic plan could call for 40,000 troops, along with aircraft, ships and weapons.

According to Arab media, a US report said that the decision will apply to US troops stationed in Germany, Italy and Spain, while some troops are being considered to be transferred to Eastern Europe near Russia.

According to the report, the US Department of Defense began reviewing the proposal in June, and a final decision is expected in November.

The US move comes amid growing tensions with European countries, with Washington demanding European allies increase defense spending and provide bases for US military operations.

A large-scale U.S. military withdrawal from Europe could affect the U.S. nuclear and conventional defense presence on the continent while also reducing the U.S. ability to use military power in Europe.

On the other hand, European countries have committed to spend 5 percent of the gross national product on defense under NATO by 2035, in which at least 3.5 percent will be allocated for direct defense needs.
