Federal Energy Minister Owais Laghari has said that the government is practically withdrawing from the purchase of electricity from today.

Talking to the media in Islamabad, he said that no one will have the right to sell electricity to the government, nor will the government buy it.

Owais Leghari said that the producers and consumers of electricity in the country will buy and sell themselves, this system will be applied first to industrial or large consumers, by making the system more transparent, consumers will be able to get low cost electricity.

He said that providing cheap electricity to the people is a priority, 800 megawatts of electricity will be auctioned in the next 5 years, 400 megawatts are going to be offered for auction in the first phase, the electricity buying and selling system will be based on transparency.

The federal minister further said that this system will be applied first to industrial or large consumers, in the coming years a market of electricity will be created, under this system even an ordinary consumer will be able to buy electricity at will, now the government will not be able to buy electricity and sell it to the public at its own rates.
