In Bangladesh, 19-year-old Maryam, the second wife of Member of Assembly Ghazi Nazrul Islam, allegedly committed suicide, the police arrested Ghazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife.

According to the FIR, Ghazi Nazrul Islam’s second wife Maryam was found hanging from a fan at her house yesterday, while a handwritten suicide note was also found in her bed.

According to the FIR, Masoom Ballah is a grocery vendor and father of three daughters, while Maryam was his eldest daughter. Maryam got married to Ghazi Nazrul Islam in June.

Maryam’s father alleged that Obaidur Rehman played a direct role in the marriage. After the marriage, Maryam told her family several times over the phone that Ghazi Nazrul Islam and Maqsuda were subjecting her to physical and mental violence.

Masoom Ballah, while demanding a full investigation of the incident and punishment of those responsible, told the media that his daughter did not talk to him much, however, he often spoke to the member of the assembly on the phone and Maryam was present with him.

According to him, when he tried to talk to his daughter, she barely responded. He demanded an inquiry into Maryam’s death, saying that he wanted justice and the real culprit should be punished.

Maryam’s father blamed his daughter’s maternal uncle Obaidul Rahman for the incident. According to him, Maryam had told him that she had more faith in Obaidur Rahman than her father, but because of that faith, she got into trouble.

Masoom Ballah registered a case against Ghazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maqsuda Begum and Obaidul Rehman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station for the death of his daughter, which includes provisions related to incitement to suicide.

Later, the police produced Ghazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife in the court, where the court handed over Ghazi Nazrul Islam to the police on 4 days physical remand and Maqsuda Begum on one day physical remand.

The police had requested a 7-day remand for both.

It should be noted that Ghazi Nazrul Islam was elected from Satkhira-4 on the ticket of Jamaat-e-Islami, but Jamaat-e-Islami expelled him from the party over the issue of his second marriage.

An internal investigation conducted by the party found him guilty of ‘moral turpitude’.
