Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif. — Firefly Aerospace successfully launched its Alpha rocket into orbit Wednesday evening, marking a key milestone for the Texas-based space company after a series of setbacks last year.
The mission, called “Stairway to Seven,” lifted off from Space Launch Complex-2 at Vandenberg Space Force Base at approximately 5:50 p.m. Pacific Time. The rocket reached orbit and deployed a technology demonstrator payload for Lockheed Martin.
The flight represents the seventh launch of Firefly’s Alpha rocket and the company’s first successful mission in nearly a year.
Comeback After 2025 Launch Setbacks
Firefly’s Alpha program faced major challenges in 2025 after two explosive incidents halted operations and forced engineers to review manufacturing and launch procedures.
The new mission was designed as a return-to-flight test, focusing on verifying that both rocket stages perform normally before the next generation of the vehicle enters service.
Engineers also used the mission to test updated onboard systems and operational improvements introduced after last year’s failures.
Testing New Technology for Future Rockets
During the launch, Firefly validated several upgrades planned for its upcoming Alpha Block II configuration, including a new in-house avionics suite and enhanced thermal protection systems.
The rocket also successfully performed a second-stage engine relight, a capability that allows more flexible satellite deployments in orbit.
Executives say the data gathered from this flight will help refine the upgraded rocket version expected to debut on the next mission.
Competing in the Small Satellite Launch Market
Firefly’s Alpha rocket is designed to deliver more than 1,000 kilograms of payload to low Earth orbit, targeting the rapidly expanding market for small satellites used in communications, Earth observation and national security missions.
The vehicle is part of a growing class of small-lift rockets competing with companies across the commercial space industry.
What Comes Next for Firefly
The Stairway to Seven mission is expected to be the final flight of Alpha in its current configuration before the company rolls out its upgraded Block II version, which aims to improve reliability and manufacturing efficiency.
With the successful launch, Firefly Aerospace has taken a significant step toward restoring confidence in its launch system and expanding its presence in the competitive commercial space sector.
