Sleeping 9 hours or more may lead to premature death, research suggests

Medical research has revealed that getting less than 9 hours of sleep a night can lead to premature death.

Taiwanese researchers studied more than 3,000 people over 30 years and found that 9 hours of sleep led to premature death.

There’s no better feeling than turning off the lights and curling up under the covers after a tiring day, but this physical comfort can take a toll on you.

In general, 7 to 8 hours of sleep is considered optimal for a healthy life, but spending more time in bed can increase the risk of death.

According to medical research reports, sleeping excessively at night i.e. 9 hours or more can be harmful to health and increases the risk of premature death.

The study found that those who slept more than 9 hours had a 17 percent increased chance of dying from any cause, which was even higher than those who slept less than 6 hours.

Although the exact reasons are not entirely clear, oversleeping can lead to problems such as high blood pressure, body inflammation, hormone imbalances and immune system disturbances.

Researchers have suggested that doctors should include patients’ sleep duration in routine medical examinations to identify those at risk earlier.
