According to the Institute of International Finance (IIF), in the first 6 months of 2026, the world’s debt has increased by 10 thousand billion dollars, in the first 6 months of 2025, the global debt has increased by 21 thousand billion dollars.
Global Debt Monitor says debt growth is above its 5-year average due to rising interest rates, high debt financing, rising energy prices and the Iran conflict.
According to IIF, the debt of emerging economies has increased by 6,500 billion in 6 months, China’s debt has increased the most among emerging economies.
The Global Debt Monitor has said that the US, France, UK and Japan have problems with persistent fiscal deficits and high interest payments, while advanced economies’ interest payments, AI, defense and energy spending have exceeded spending.
Interest costs for major advanced economies are at an 18-year high, the debt-to-GDP ratio appears stable due to inflation, but financial risks are actually rising, the Institute of International Finance says.
