A mother who killed her 1-month-old baby girl in the US state of Missouri has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.

According to US media reports and Jackson County court documents, 28-year-old Missouri woman Maria Thomas has admitted that she was responsible for the girl’s death.

The report states that this incident took place in February 2024 in Kansas City, when the rescue personnel reached the spot, the girl’s body was found with burn marks and she was pronounced dead.

According to the report, Maria Thomas told the police in her statement that she took the baby girl to sleep and accidentally put her in the oven.

The report states that Maria Thomas pleaded guilty to the nature of the charge and pleaded not guilty to mental illness, so the court ordered her to pay $68 in restitution to the state Crime Victims Fund, while other court costs were waived.

According to the report, Maria Thomas will now be transferred to the state prison.
