A 24-year-old teacher and a 10-year-old student died after falling into a lake during a school trip in the US state of Iowa.

According to officials and school administration, the incident occurred during a school trip to Lake McBride State Park on Tuesday. The body of female teacher Hannah Jorgensen was recovered from Coralville Reservoir on Tuesday afternoon, while divers recovered the body of 10-year-old student Ahmed Osman from the same location about 25 hours later.

According to officials, it was not immediately clear how the teacher and the student ended up in the water. A massive search and recovery operation involving the Johnson County Metro Dive Team, local fire departments, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the State Patrol, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and medical personnel followed the incident.

The school administration expressed its deep sorrow over the deaths, saying that Hannah and Ahmed were not just members of the school community and will be missed in the classrooms, school hallways and in the lives of those who loved them.

The school has also arranged support and counseling for affected students and staff.
