PESHAWAR (Arshad Aziz Malik) During the approval of the proposed amendments to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Act, the provincial cabinet met with sharp differences between police officials and ministers on police powers, appointments, transfers and command structure. According to the sources, there was an exchange of sharp sentences between the police officials and the cabinet members on some issues. The police officials repeatedly warned the cabinet that the proposed amendments will affect the current command and administrative structure of the police, political interference will increase and any future government will use the police powers against political objectives and opponents. It was decided by the provincial government that appointment and transfer posting of 18, 19, 20 and 21 grade officers should be with the Chief Minister, while the transfer and posting of SP and DSP level officers should be given to the Home Department. Appointments and transfers of officers at different levels are under the same structure and giving direct powers to the political government will interfere with the professional command system of the police.
