We’ve finally gotten our first official look at the highly anticipated fourth season of The Diplomat, and if the new trailer, stunning key art, and set images are everything, the stakes have never been higher.

The trailer is full of betrayals, subs, and marriage problems

Creator and showrunner Deborah Cahn has mastered the art of mixing high-stakes international espionage with razor-sharp personal drama, and the new Season 4 trailer goes all-in on it.

The footage begins with a chilling discovery from Kate Wyler (Keri Russell): A Russian submarine carrying an apocalypse weapon has run aground, and someone has stolen it. development? The “one” appears to be an unholy alliance between her husband, Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), and President Grace Penn (Allison Janney).

“What worries me is that you two are, yes, dangerous together,” Kate says in the trailer, and they can’t be right. The footage highlights the frightening reality that Hal and Grace operate as a unit with no brakes.

But Kate is not fighting this battle alone. The new season introduces a fascinating new dynamic: Kate teams up with the president’s husband, Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford). It’s a battle of the couple as Kate and Todd unite to prevent Grace Hall’s alliance from pushing the United States into all-out war with Russia. Kate does what she’s done since early on in the show and tries to smooth things out and get everyone working together (or rowing in the same direction as she said), but not everyone is convinced, as she’s been accused of sounding like a “dodgy car dealer.”

First look photos and official poster

Along with the trailer, Netflix has released the official poster for Season 4, which is a masterclass in tension. It features the main four – Hal, Grace, Kate, and Todd – squinting intensely in front of a classic painting. It’s a great visual representation of a couple preparing to “eat each other alive.”

We’re also treated to an expanded gallery of brand new stills featuring the cast. Kate and Hal look tense all the time, coats out, cold looks in formal wear, and it’s clear that Hal’s backroom dealings with the president are taking a toll on the marriage. President Ben Allison Janney is shown manning the Oval Office with new Vice President Hal Weiler at her side, while Rory Kinnear returns as Prime Minister Nicole Trowbridge, who appears to be “angry” enough to risk “armed conflict.” Ali Ahn and Ato Essandoh share a real intimate moment as Eidra and Stuart, so it’s clear the story is still maturing. Nana Mensah also made an appearance, spotted with G7 credentials in Italy. And in the most unexpected of pairings, Kate hosts a warm and informal dinner party with Bradley Whitford’s Todd Penn, and they team up against their respective spouses.
