Official renewal status: Not yet renewed (pending)

As of now, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 It has not been officially renewed for a third season. If you’re wondering why Season 1 and Season 2 were released so close to each other, it’s because the series originally received a two-season pre-order from Netflix. This is not uncommon with animated shows due to the length of time a show takes to be in production in the animated world. We know this show has been in the works since 2023 and we can see when shows get proper renewals from Netflix in the genre (e.g. Blue-eyed samurai) They take a while to come out. Our understanding is that the initial order has now been executed.

Although we’ve heard there’s some early development and planning for season 3, it will still need an official green light from Netflix executives to move forward with production.

All of this is supported by Eric Robles, the show’s director, who… She recently took to Instagram To interact with fans, when asked about a third season, they explained exactly what would need to happen to renew the show:

Viewership is driving the new season, so help me spread the word.

If viewership is the deciding factor, current data paints a troubling picture for the future of viewing.

looking at Our top 10 search toolsThe series appeared for two weeks among the top 10 series in the world after the launch of its first season, achieving 23.9 million hours of viewing, equivalent to 4.9 million views. From there, the series went on to pick up a Net total hours viewed: 40.4 million In the first half of 2026, equivalent to 8.3 million views. For an animated show, this is pretty good but it’s not a storm when compared to other Netflix shows, especially the mother show from which the series is based.

Season 2 also seems to be struggling to make a significant impact in the global charts. According to early Top 10 daily data from FlixPatrolthe series appears in the top 10 TV charts overall but only in a few countries. During its first few days of service, it was completely absent from the charts in key territories, only appearing in the bottom tier (ranked No. 8 to No. 10) in countries such as Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Sri Lanka and Ukraine.

It performed slightly better on our list of the top 10 kids’ TV shows:

  • Goodness: It peaked at number two in Argentina, Chile and Mexico, and remained steady in the top three for countries such as France, Italy, Portugal and Romania.
  • The bad: In major English-speaking markets, it lags badly. It only reached number eight in the US, number six in Canada, and number seven in Australia on the children’s charts.

For such a huge franchise Strange thingsNetflix typically expects dominant weeks-long periods at the top of the charts. Unless word of mouth spreads as the exhibitor hopes, it may face an uphill battle for renewal.

What do you expect from Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 Season 3

If the show returns, the writers have left plenty of room for new stories. Here’s a quick recap of how Season 2 wrapped up and where it left our characters.

how Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 Season 2 ends

The Season 2 finale delivers a classic, multi-faceted showdown for Hawkins. With Daniel Fisher (Lou Diamond Phillips) dangerously close to breaking out of the Inverted, the gang is forced to split up and take on the mind-controlled plants.

In the old Hawkins Mines, Dustin, Nicky, Will and Charlie narrowly escape a swarm of hate goblins by sparking a massive underground volcanic eruption. On the roof, Lucas and Max manage to escape from an angry Jeff and his friends by using a motorcycle explosion to burn the iridescent “murder flowers” covering the local bridge. This fiery destruction proves to be the key: by burning the flowers, they cut off “Wood Monster Daniel’s” power source. The giant tree monster covered in flowers was severely weakened by Mike and Eleven in the forest. The portal seals close on its own, and Daniel’s physical body finally vanishes into the Upside Down.

The result leaves things in an interesting place. On a personal level, Mike finally works up the courage to ask Eleven to be his girlfriend at the Palace Arcade, and the gang’s video report successfully makes the local news, exposing Samuel Hawkins and exonerating Charlie’s predecessor, Bill “Blood Axe” Dandridge.

More importantly for the future of the show, we learned that Nikki will be around Hawkins for a while longer, as her mother (Janeane Garofalo) has taken a job teaching biology at Hawkins High School.

What could Season 3 include? Timeline obstacles and missing characters…

If you look at the broader discussions and articles across the web right now, you’ll find that a potential third season has a very specific set of key hurdles to clear.

Showrunner Eric Robles previously stated that the goal of the animated spin-off show is to bridge the gap to the threshold of the original live-action third season. With Season 2 taking place on Valentine’s Day 1985, Season 3 will inevitably push the schedule up against the summer holidays and the opening of Starcourt Mall.

As media fans have pointed out, this creates a huge continuity puzzle. Since original animated characters such as Nikki (Odyssey Azion) and Charlie do not appear in the live-action third season, it is a new season of Tales from ’85 They will have to finish their stories and explain their sudden absence from Hawkins.

If the show is renewed, expect a third season (or maybe even another way to end things) to serve as the final connective tissue – tying up those loose moving ends so that the transition straight to the summer of 1985 will be completely seamless.
