Breaking the first trailer

The teaser trailer clocks in at just under two-and-a-half minutes, with a special, awesome clip from “6 underground” by Sneaker Pimps. The music perfectly establishes the “1939 meets distant future” aesthetic that Byrd has been teasing for decades.

“You know, photographs are such a business. It’s all about light and dark and all the beautiful shades of gray in between,” an unseen voice intones at the beginning of the footage, immediately setting a morally ambiguous tone.

The footage introduces us to young private eye Raymond “Ray” Gunn. “Mr. Dan, I believe?” asks a voice. “So what can I do for you?”

Ray is soon drawn into a tangled web involving the passionate and allegedly violent pop star Venus Nova. The trailer’s dialogue reads like a classic Raymond Chandler novel. We hear characters warning the detective, “Be careful, Ray. We know how the world works. No one is pure. We’re all just playing.”

Obviously, the film doesn’t skimp on danger either. Amid threats to be thrown out of windows and framed for murder (“I didn’t do it!”), the trailer ramps up into high-octane action, complete with bike chases, explosions, and Ray’s alien friend screaming, “Ray! Jump!”

The film closes perfectly with a phrase that could easily describe the film itself: “I like you, Gunn. You’re a real throwback.”
