A snake crawled out of a double loaf shelf in a grocery store in England.

An animal education group says the snake is among more than 20 snakes the group has taken into custody this year.

According to Cumbria, a member of the group, a small corn snack was found in the bread section of the Heron Food Store in Maryport on August 14, and handed over to Workington-based Pet Encounter.

According to animal handler Ben Nicholson, there has been a significant increase in snake rescues at Pet Encounters. So far this year, 21 snakes have come into their custody, compared to 14 in 2025.

He said that due to inflation and rising costs, many pet owners may no longer be able to afford their animals.

He told the British media that equipment, heat mats and heat bulbs, all have a price and we are currently going through a cost crisis. People are trying to reduce their energy consumption.
