AI may wipe out all humans: Scary warning from ‘Godfather of AI’

Glasgow: Geoffrey Hinton, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) expert and known as the ‘Godfather of AI’, has warned that super-powerful artificial intelligence could lead to the end of the human race in the future.

The Nobel Prize-winning scientist said in a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) program that the risk of complete extinction of humans by AI could be as high as 10%.

The host wondered again if they really thought there was a 10% chance of human extinction. To which Hinton replied ‘yes’. The BBC host was also shocked and silent for a few moments.

If artificial intelligence becomes more intelligent than humans, it could be extremely difficult to control, Hinton said.

According to him, humans are currently developing such intelligence that in some fields it has started to show better performance than humans.

He warned that the situation could be very dangerous if the powerful AI of the future is able to determine its own interests and goals.

According to the expert, large-scale cyber-attacks, disinformation and other destructive actions may be possible through AI.

He said that along with the development of AI, scientists must also pay immediate attention to ensuring its safety and human control.

Hinton clarified that current AI systems are not immediately causing the end of humanity, but the dangers of more powerful future systems cannot be ignored.

He said that humans have to seriously consider that they are not creating a technology that they cannot control themselves later.

There is already a heated debate among scientists around the world regarding the possible existential dangers of artificial intelligence. Experts say that with the benefits of AI comes the dangers of its misuse and uncontrolled development.

Hinton called for more steps to global AI safety and effective oversight, saying delay in this matter could prove dangerous.
