Algeria has decided to sever diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
According to Algerian state TV, the decision was made after all possible means were used to maintain relations between the two countries. However, Algeria did not immediately give a specific reason for ending diplomatic relations.
There has been an increase in tension between the two countries for some time now. Algerian media have in the past accused the UAE of fomenting discord and chaos in the region.
Algerian President Abdelmajid Taboun last year described relations with Gulf countries as generally fraternal, without naming a country, saying it was trying to interfere in Algeria’s internal affairs and destabilize the country, in what was widely seen as a gesture towards the United Arab Emirates.
In February this year, Algeria also started the process of canceling the air services agreement concluded in 2013 with the United Arab Emirates.
