Lithium batteries, commonly used in electric vehicles, rely on a solution of manlithium salt and oxygen atoms to react to produce electricity. These batteries require a large amount of solution, which makes it difficult to downsize these batteries. This solution does not work well at low temperatures. These batteries can generate energy as close as 350 watt-hours per kilogram.
The researchers say that the density in the new batteries can exceed 700 watt-hours per kilogram at room temperature and approach 400 watt-hours per kilogram at minus 50 degrees Celsius. The new batteries use a “fluorinated hydrocarbon” solution that effectively dissolves the lithium salts.
