Karachi (Babar Ali Awan) During anti-polio campaigns in Sindh, the process of appointing unrelated and low-grade employees as Union Council Management Officer (UCMO) has started once again. During the anti-polio campaign that started from Monday, Mali, deputy messenger, watchman and driver have been appointed as UCMOs in Central District. This situation has come at a time when the presence of polio virus has been confirmed in the environmental samples of three districts of Karachi, including the central district, and due to the environmental spread of the virus in the city, effective monitoring at the Union Council level, accurate micro-plans, real coverage of children and transparent reporting have become more important than before in the anti-polio campaign. In such a situation, the appointment of unrelated employees instead of qualified persons for the responsibility of UCMO has raised questions regarding the implementation of the policy of the polio program. Remember that ‘Jung’ had pointed out on August 31, 2024 that in anti-polio campaigns instead of doctors, financial workers, drivers, ward servants, midwives and other unrelated persons are being deployed in UCMO. Taking cognizance of the news, the then EOC Coordinator Irshad Ali Sodhar issued instructions on September 8, 2024 that Deputy Messenger, Clerk, Khansama, Dresser, Driver, Chowkidar, Cashier, Store Keeper, Attendant, Stenographer, Ward Servant, Insect Collector and Data Operator and other unrelated persons should not be posted in UCMO. In this regard, District Health Officer Central Dr. Adnan Khan said that a large number of doctors have been transferred in the district, while some of the existing doctors are not willing to work, due to which the mentioned persons have been temporarily given the responsibilities of UCMO.
