Birmingham’s Edgbaston Cricket Ground, where the third and final Test of the ICC Test Championship series between England and Pakistan will be played from Wednesday (September 9), is the venue for the greatest individual first-class innings in the history of first-class cricket, 501 not out.

Former West Indies Test captain and legendary batsman Brian Charles Lara achieved this feat on 6 June 1994, when he played this innings for the hosts Warwickshire against Durham.

In this memorable innings in the history of first-class cricket, Brian Lara faced 427 balls which included 62 fours and 10 sixes. Brian Lara broke Hanif Muhammad’s world record of 499 runs, which was set by the Little Master in 1959.

Brian Lara also set the record for the highest innings in Test cricket by scoring 375 runs in the first innings at St. John’s Antigua in April 1994 against England exactly 50 days after his record 501 not out in first-class cricket.

Not only this, Lara made the highest individual score in Test cricket by playing an innings of 400 not out against England after 10 years on the same ground in April 2004.
