Karachi (Staff Reporter) Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has directed to coordinate with the Pakistan Airports Authority on the project of expanding Karachi Airport and building a greenfield airport in Sukkur and to solve land and communication issues on a priority basis. Under the proposed projects, the annual capacity of 1.6 million passengers at Sukkur Airport, the number of 285 feet high ATC tower and the number of boarding bridges at Jinnah International is proposed to be increased from 12 to 25. Details According to this, a delegation led by PAA DG Air Vice Marshal Zeeshan Saeed met the Chief Minister, in which Sukkur Greenfield, improvement and expansion of Jinnah International, up-gradation of Hyderabad Airport and the proposal to convert Katy into Pakistan’s first aviation university were reviewed. The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary Agha Wasif, Chairman P&D Najam Shah, Commissioner Karachi Hasan Naqvi while Deputy DG Samir Saeed, Director Kashif Shah and other officers were present in the PAA delegation. PAA said in the briefing that the new Sukkur Airport will act as a regional gateway for Upper Sindh and adjoining areas, which can also be used as an alternative for flights diverting from Karachi. As per the feasibility, the existing Sukkur Airport faces airspace and land constraints, with a population of 29.6 million within a three-hour travel radius. About 3,000 acres of land will be required for the new airport and the Sindh government has been invited to include the land as equity under the PPP. The briefing on the improvement of Jinnah International said that passenger facilities, flooring, ceilings, lighting, signboards and cultural heritage elements of the Indus Valley Civilization are being added.
