We finally know when The murder of JonBenet Ramsey will be brought to our screens, as Netflix has officially set a global release date of December 10 for the highly anticipated limited series.
To tide us over until the trailer drops, Netflix also gave us our first look at the new series, and the transformation between its two main stars is incredible.
In the all-new first photo (see above), Oscar nominees Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen are seen portraying Patsy and JonBenet Ramsay. The tense couple, dressed in sombre mourning clothes, were photographed sitting side by side in front of a TV camera crew. It’s a chilling recreation of the intense media scrutiny and widely publicized interviews the real-life couple conducted in the wake of the tragic events of Christmas 1996. The design and makeup teams clearly went to great lengths to capture the aesthetic of the late ’90s, with McCarthy looking almost unrecognizable in the role of Patsy.

Netflix picked up the series back on July 1, after it had previously been in development and was at one point planned for release on Paramount+, but Paramount ultimately decided not to go ahead, despite producing it anyway. Netflix has acquired global rights.
If this case sounds familiar to your Netflix queues, that’s because this isn’t the first time the streamer has explored a tragic, unsolved murder. In 2017, Netflix released the popular, if largely unconventional, original documentary Casting John Bennett. While this project took a meta-experimental approach by interviewing local Colorado residents as they auditioned for roles in a fictional film about the case, this new series is a lively and solemn dramatization of the devastating personal and public reckoning that followed the murder. They then followed this up with a 3-part documentary series in 2024 called Part of them Cool condition Brand.
Produced by 101 Studios (the force behind Yellowstone and Mayor of Kingstown), the series is directed by showrunner, writer and executive producer Richard LaGravenese (Behind the candlesticks, Family issue). Anne Siwitsky (Presumed innocent) serves as director and executive producer, with Harrison Querrey and Tommy Wallach co-writing.
