Harvey Weinstein, the former American film producer and co-founder of the production companies Miramax and Weinstein, was sentenced to 15 years in prison by a New York court on Wednesday for sex crimes in another May Two case.

Weinstein was convicted in 2020 of sexually assaulting former TV production assistant Haley, but that conviction was overturned after a legal battle that lasted more than six years. A jury convicted him again in a retrial last year.

Formerly one of the most powerful figures in the film industry, the 74-year-old Oscar-winning producer’s famous films include Shakespeare in Love, Pulp Fiction and Chocolate. His downfall began in 2017 after allegations of sexual abuse surfaced, sparking the Me-Too movement.

Haley appeared in court Wednesday morning and recounted harassment and humiliation over the past seven years, saying she was publicly defamed by Weinstein, his defense team and podcasters she suspects were paid to smear her reputation.

New York District Attorney Nicole Blumberg, on behalf of prosecutors, asked the court to sentence Weinstein to 20 years in prison and five years of supervised release.

Weinstein said in his statement that he regrets dealing with Haley, has to live with a lot of embarrassment and is sorry for what he has done.

Weinstein’s lawyers said he had a number of health problems, including blood cancer and heart disease. He had requested a nine-year sentence.

Before handing down the sentence, the judge said Weinstein will be remembered not only for making movies, but also for the MeToo movement. She said Weinstein took advantage of Haley’s dreams of working in the film industry.
