India’s rejection of the Indus Basin Agreement is incomprehensible: Sherry Rehman

People’s Party Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman has said that India’s refusal of the Indus Basin Agreement is incomprehensible.

In an interview with a Russian TV channel, he said that the Indus Basin Treaty is an important global example for transboundary water sharing, the Indus Basin Treaty provides a clear system for water sharing, information exchange and dispute resolution.

Sherry Rahman has said that the Indus Basin Agreement does not contain any clause to unilaterally suspend or declare it inactive, unilaterally suspending or ignoring the agreement raises serious legal questions.

He said that arbitral tribunal and neutral expert procedure are two different ways of dispute resolution, Pakistan is reviewing the legal avenues available under the Indus Basin Treaty.

Sherry Rahman says that we want a peaceful solution to the conflict, water should not be the cause of any new conflict, Pakistan is playing a role in regional stability beyond South Asia.

He said that the defense cooperation of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey is not against any specific country, Pakistan prefers mutual interest and regional cooperation instead of conflict.
