Calcium and magnesium batteries, on the other hand, are characterized by the fact that calcium is abundant in the Earth’s crust, is not in short supply, and can be cheap. Calcium is a “divalent” ion (ie +2 charge), which means an ion can carry a slightly higher charge.
Basically the energy density can be increased. According to research, calcium-ion batteries perform well over charge cycles. For example, a prototype from the Chinese Academy of Sciences retained 84 percent of its original capacity after about 1,000 charge cycles.
