Pakistan, IMF talks started, pressure on government to reduce petroleum levy


Islamabad (Mehtab Haider) Pakistan, IMF negotiations have started, pressure is increasing on the government to reduce the petroleum levy, under review of the economic and financial framework for 2026-27, Pakistan has met most of the targets and performance standards. After the SLA, $1.2 billion will pave the way for approval, FBR’s two-month tax collection has reached 1,722 billion rupees. Fearing that the target will be affected, obstacles may pose a threat to tax collection, Pakistan and the visiting IMF review mission have started negotiations to complete the fourth review under the $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program, in which the financial framework is also being discussed. The talks have begun at a time when pressure is mounting on the government to reduce the burden of the petroleum levy.
