The master of hand-drawn animation is making his way into your Netflix queue. Beautifully animated feature by Sylvain Chomet, Wonderful lifeis officially set to make its SVOD debut, arriving on Netflix in the US on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Following its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and its U.S. theatrical release last spring via Sony Pictures Classics, the acclaimed film is the latest highly anticipated title to arrive on Netflix as part of its ongoing Pay-1 window deal with Sony.
September is turning out to be a very strong month for new third-party movie pick-ups. Wonderful life It joins a remarkably diverse and stacked lineup of recent video-on-demand (VOD) content premieres arriving on Netflix US. It follows the award-winning Iraqi drama President’s cake (which was released earlier on September 3), the documentary about extreme sports Climbing girl (September 16), a parody of the Bleecker Street disaster Stop! Which! Train! (September 20), a British cyber-theft thriller LifeHack (September 23).
Here’s everything you need to know about this great new addition before it launches on Netflix.
What is it Wonderful life on?
Written and directed by four-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Sylvain Chomet (the visionary behind beloved animated classics like… Belleville triplets and The placebo), Wonderful life (Also known by its original French name, Marcel and Mr. Pagnol) is an animated biographical drama for adults.
Set in 1955, the film follows legendary French playwright and director Marcel Pagnol. Aged 60 and reeling from recent professional disappointments, Pagnol was commissioned by the editor of ELLE magazine to write a weekly column recounting his childhood. Suffering from a poor memory and deeply doubting his artistic abilities, Pagnol is unexpectedly visited by “Little Marcel” – the little boy he used to be, who seems to him as if by magic.
Blending memory and imagination, Marcel the Elder and the Younger collaborate to explore the writer’s childhood in Provence, his first loves, and his incredible journey to become one of France’s greatest storytellers.
Who is the actor and is it worth watching?
If you appreciate stunning hand-drawn animation, meticulous artistry, and deeply emotional, nostalgic stories, Wonderful life You should add it to your watchlist. During festivals and theatrical screenings, the film received widespread acclaim for Chomet’s distinctive charm and poetic homage to the Golden Age of cinema. It even received a nod for Best Film (Independent) at the 2026 Annie Awards. It holds a 68% on Rotten Tomatoeswith some referring to it as a lovingly crafted old art style, while others say it’s a bit boring.
For the English dub of the film, the voice cast includes familiar British acting talent, including:

Meanwhile, the French-language original features the voice talents of the International Emmy Award nominee Laurent Lafitte (as Marcel Pagnol) and César Award winner Geraldine Belhas.
As with all major Sony Pictures license pickups, please note that the September 24th premiere date currently only applies to Netflix in the US and some other select territories. All films from 2027 onwards will be Universal pickups.
