A study has shown that the use of painkillers and antibiotics alone, repeatedly or over a long period of time can damage the kidneys, while the unnecessary use of antibiotics also increases resistance to the drugs in bacteria.

According to foreign media reports, researchers have instructed the public not to use any antibiotic medicine without doctor’s advice, especially in common viral diseases, not to take the leftover medicine again and not to advise others to use the medicine prescribed by the doctor.

Researchers have also advised doctors to prescribe painkillers sparingly, only in effective doses and for the shortest appropriate duration.

Antibiotics should be used only when medically necessary, the researchers say, emphasizing special caution in people with kidney disease, low water intake or heart disease.
