In a major casting coup, Netflix India has roped in popular Bollywood actress Urmila Matondkar to headline its upcoming high-profile series. The Viral Fever, commonly referred to as TVF, is producing the show, marking its third collaboration with Netflix Kuta factory Season 2 and 3 and Hello Bachchan.
The plot of the project remains confidential. However, sources familiar with the development reveal that the show is set in and around the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), where Matondkar plays the role of a director. Details of the rest of the band have not yet been revealed. Filming has begun, and the makers are targeting a mid-2027 premiere on Netflix. When contacted, Netflix declined to comment.
The as-yet-untitled project is directed by Divyanshu Malhotra from a script written by Puneet Batra. The two previously collaborated on TVF’s upcoming 2018 romantic drama Flamesand also worked separately with the banner on various projects. Malhotra had previously directed the film Compartments and six for TVF, while Batra’s writing credits include Kuta factory, MBBS processand Kashiri Court.
The latest Netflix series marks one of Urmila Matondkar’s comeback projects after a period of over a decade. One of the most prominent Bollywood actresses of the 90s and 2000s, Matondkar built a distinctive screen presence with films like Rangeela, Satya, Indian, Jewish, Ek hasina thiand Pyar ton kya kya. Her last big lead role was in the 2014 Marathi film AnswersWhile her last appearance in the film was in a song directed by Sanjay Dutt blackmail (2018). She was recently seen as one of the judges of Zee TV’s dance reality show, Super moms did Season 3.
Matondkar is all set to make her much-awaited return to acting with a revenge thriller series titled Tiwari. The 14-episode show also features GD Chakravarthy, Gauahar Khan and Rajesh Sharma in pivotal roles. Directed by Saurabh Varma, Tiwari The film revolves around a woman who, after being released from prison after 14 years for a crime she did not commit, sets out to find the person who framed her. The show is currently in post-production and aims to be released on a major streaming platform in February 2027.
Meanwhile, TVF is currently awaiting the release of its first theatrical production, The Vivian: The Power of the Jungle Starring Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia, it is slated to hit theaters on September 25. The Arunabh Kumar-led company has earned a strong reputation for producing youth-focused, family-friendly content through shows like TVF Pitchers, Kuta factory, Panchayats, Gulak, Gram Chikitsalaya, Ye Miri’s familyand Aspirantsamong other things.
