U.S. sanctions, rising inflation and war damage are exacerbating drug shortages in Iran, forcing some patients to reduce dosages, delay treatment, or use cheaper but less effective drugs.

According to the American newspaper, about 800 drugs are affected by the situation, while pharmacies are also suffering because insurance companies owe them about 300 million dollars.

Iran produces more than 97 percent of its drugs by volume, but many drugs and pharmaceutical ingredients are still dependent on imports and foreign exchange.

Experts say the U.S. sanctions complicate the payment process and prevent foreign banks and suppliers from transacting with Iranian buyers, although drugs themselves are generally exempt from the restrictions.

US and Israeli airstrikes earlier this year exacerbated the crisis, the US newspaper said.

According to Iranian officials, more than 40 pharmaceutical companies, suppliers and distributors were damaged in these attacks.
