Drinking a cup of lemon juice in the morning is often thought of as an easy way to detoxify the body or lose weight, but in reality its benefits are limited and if consumed in excess, it can have negative effects on the teeth and digestive system.
Vitamin C and antioxidants are found in lemons. According to the US Food Data Center, 100 grams of lemons contain about 53 milligrams of vitamin C, which supports metabolism and helps protect cells from oxidative stress. Due to these properties, many people consider lemon juice useful for body cleansing, weight loss and clear skin, but the scientific evidence in this regard is not convincing.
Dr. Bui Thi Duyen, deputy head of the nutrition department at Military Hospital 175 in Vietnam, does not consider lemon juice an effective detox or weight loss method. According to him, the main benefits of drinking lemon juice in the morning are to replenish the body’s water deficit after a good night’s sleep and to get a small amount of vitamin C.
Lemon juice can help keep the body hydrated, but it is not a proven method for detox or weight loss. It may have potential benefits when used in place of bubble tea or other high-sugar beverages.
Some people believe that acidic drinks stimulate the digestive system, but according to Dr. Duane, this effect is not the same for everyone. According to the American Dental Association, frequent consumption of acidic drinks such as lemon juice can damage the outer protective layer of the teeth, the enamel, especially if it is not mixed with adequate amounts of water or proper oral and dental hygiene is not maintained.
Also, drinking lemon juice on an empty stomach can cause stomach irritation and discomfort in conditions like gastritis or acid reflux. He suggested that lemon juice should be mixed with water, for example, half a lemon can be added to 200 to 300 ml of water without adding too much sugar. Drinking through a straw or rinsing with plain water afterward can help preserve tooth enamel. People with gastrointestinal problems should take special care.
Health does not depend on a single diet or routine. The most important thing is to eat a balanced diet, eat at the right times and have an overall healthy lifestyle. Instead of looking for a quick fix, adopt a habit of eating according to the biological clock. Distribute your energy needs evenly throughout the day and prefer to have more energy during the day than at night. Include vegetables and quality protein in your diet, limit sugar and processed foods.
