If early elections are held in Turkey, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan can run again in 2028.

According to international media reports, early elections in Turkey may be held on April 16, 2028.

The report quoted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s adviser Mehmet Ocham as saying that if 360 out of 600 members of parliament vote in favor of new elections, the elections could be held on April 16, 2028.

Under current Turkish law, presidential elections are normally scheduled for May 2028, but the constitution allows parliament to hold early elections, provided the move is supported by 360 members.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AKP and its nationalist coalition MHP hold a combined 326 seats in parliament, so they would need the support of another 34 members to approve early elections.

Speculation about early elections was fueled when the Turkish president mentioned the upcoming elections during a speech in his home province of Reze last week.

Later, the spokesman of the ruling AKP party, Umar Çelik, clarified that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s statement should not be considered as a sign of early elections and that there are no elections currently on the government’s agenda.

In addition, the leader of the opposition in Turkey, Özgur Ozil, has been demanding early elections since 2025, but who will be the candidate from the opposition in the possible presidential election of 2028? The situation in this regard is not clear at present.
