Asim Iftikhar says that in view of the seriousness of the crisis in Yemen, diplomatic efforts must be speeded up immediately.

Addressing the emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed said that Houthi attacks pose serious threats to regional peace and stability.

He said that the spread of Houthi attacks around Bab al-Mandab is a cause of serious tension, the deteriorating situation in Yemen has entered a very dangerous stage, urgent measures are inevitable.

Asim Iftikhar said that Pakistan condemns all Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia in the strongest terms, Houthi attacks can have serious effects on global economy and energy security.

Threatening or weaponizing critical shipping lanes would have serious implications for global trade and energy security, he said.

Asim Iftikhar clarified that Pakistan fully supports the sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan also fully supports the legitimate right of Saudi Arabia to defend itself.

He also said that he will continue to support sincere efforts for de-escalation, negotiations and political settlement in Yemen. A comprehensive political settlement in Yemen can become the basis of sustainable peace and regional stability.
