In the city of Guwahati, Assam, India, the husband killed his wife on suspicion of having an illicit relationship, the police arrested the suspect.
According to police, 30-year-old taxi operator Ramanujan Goswami allegedly killed his 25-year-old wife Riya Talukdar on the morning of September 3. After the incident, the accused escaped by locking the house from outside, but later reached Hatti village police station and handed himself over to the police.
The incident took place in a rented house in Basitapur area of Guwahati. The police were informed when the neighbors complained about the smell coming from the closed house.
During the search of the house, the police recovered the victim’s head in a black plastic bag from the refrigerator, while other body parts were also found in the house. The police have also seized the alleged murder weapon from the crime scene.
According to the police, a blood-stained sharp instrument has been recovered from the crime scene, which will be sent for forensic examination. The police also found empty liquor bottles and the accused claimed during investigation that he was drunk at the time of the murder.
According to the neighbors, there was an argument between the husband and wife on September 3 and shouting sounds were also heard from the house. Later, the husband locked the house from outside and left, which got the neighbors suspicious.
Police said that according to preliminary evidence, the victim died at least 24 hours before the head was found. The forensic team has collected evidence from the spot while the body has been shifted to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
The police have registered a case against the accused, including the provisions of murder and destruction of evidence. Police are investigating the motive behind the murder and other aspects related to the incident.
The deceased Riya Talukdar worked in a boutique. According to family members, Rhea and Goswami were in a relationship for many years and got married last year.
Riya’s family told the police that Goswami has had incidents of domestic violence in his past and had been in a rehabilitation center for about three months this year.
Police are looking into his past behavior and all the evidence related to the incident.
