Revolutionary Guards have announced demarcation of maritime boundaries from Chabahar to some parts of the Arabian Sea.
According to the British news agency Reuters, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have announced on Wednesday that a restricted maritime zone will be established from Chabahar to the Gulf of Oman and some parts of the Arabian Sea, but the exact boundaries and geographical coordinates of this area will be released later.
The IRGC spokesman says that ships passing through the restricted area without communicating with Iran will face restrictions.
The announcement of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards has come at a time when tensions between the United States and Iran have increased significantly in the region and maritime traffic around the Strait of Hormuz is facing serious threats.
Earlier on Sunday, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohsin Rezaei, said that Iran will establish a limited maritime zone outside the Strait of Hormuz in the next few days.
Chabahar is a major port located on the coast of the Gulf of Oman in Sistan and Balochistan province of Iran and provides direct access to the Indian Ocean.
The latest developments could lead to further escalation of already existing maritime tensions in the region, especially at a time when commercial shipping movements in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman are already severely affected.
