France has said that despite the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), allowing Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s plane to pass through French airspace is in accordance with international law.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pascal Confafre, while talking to the journalists, said that France has already allowed Netanyahu’s plane to pass through the airspace.

They say that the Rome Statute, the treaty that formed the basis for the establishment of the ICC, does not impose any obligation on member states to prevent a state aircraft carrying a passenger from passing through their airspace against whom an arrest warrant is issued.

Speaking on the situation in the Middle East, the French Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that the 1974 separation agreement between Israel and Syria is still in force.

He also reiterated France’s support for the UN Disengagement Observer Force.

It is a United Nations peacekeeping mission tasked with helping to maintain a ceasefire between Israel and Syria.

Earlier yesterday, Netanyahu’s plane, which was going to the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly session, used the airspace of Greece, Italy and France despite the arrest warrant against him by the International Criminal Court.

According to FlightRadar24, a website that monitors flights, Netanyahu’s plane left Israel for the United States on Thursday morning and passed through the airspace of European countries that are members of the International Criminal Court.

All three countries, Greece, Italy and France, are parties to the Rome Statute, which is the basic treaty establishing the International Criminal Court.

Under this agreement, these countries are generally obliged to cooperate with the ICC’s requests for the arrest and extradition of such wanted persons on their territory.
