A new report on the US attack on a girls’ school in Menab, Iran, claims that the attack was the result of false information received by artificial intelligence.

According to a Bloomberg report, the Pentagon’s initial investigation revealed that the attack was based on outdated and flawed information provided by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).

The report also cites over-reliance on artificial intelligence in targeting as a major reason for this attack.

According to the report, AI included in Palantir Technologies’ ‘Muon Smart System’ mistakenly identified the school as a naval installation of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and added it to the list of potential targets.

The report stated that it was clear from satellite images that the walls and entrances between the military installation and the school had been separated years ago, and in 2019 some US intelligence analysts had also identified changes in the location, but this information was not stored in the central US targeting database, which is why the data was showing the school as a Revolutionary Guards installation.

In this regard, experts say that the speed of AI has reduced the opportunities for human supervision and scrutiny, which led to such a large error.

Experts have warned that similar tragedies may occur in the future due to increasing reliance on machines in war decisions.

It should be noted that during the attacks on Iran by the US and Israel on February 28, the girls’ school ‘Shajra Tayyaba’ located in the city of Menab, Iran was targeted, as a result of which around 150 to 175 people, including female students, were martyred.
