The shift from traditional smoking to e-cigarettes and other nicotine products in the US has been shown to reduce cancer rates in the future.
A new study published in JNCI Cancer Spectrum examined data from the US Federal Health Survey from 2015 to 2023.
According to the research, there was a significant decline in traditional smoking across almost all age groups during this period, with the decline being particularly pronounced among 18- to 34-year-olds.
In contrast, only the number of users of alternative nicotine products, particularly e-cigarettes, increased.
According to Kenneth Michael Cummings, who led the study and is a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, this trend shows that many smokers are switching to vaping entirely instead of using both products at the same time.
The study found that the rate of people using both cigarettes and e-cigarettes was around 2 to 3 percent during the study period.
The scientists also developed a population harm reduction index to compare traditional smoking and use of non-burning nicotine products.
According to the researchers, the increase in the index indicates that more people are using alternatives to traditional cigarettes that reduce exposure to potentially cancer-causing chemicals.
The research found that people aged 55 and over were less likely than younger people to quit smoking and use alternative products, even though people in this age group may experience more immediate health benefits from quitting smoking.
Vaping is now more common than smoking among 18- to 24-year-olds, according to research.
Professor Cummings said that the biggest concern is that older people who have been long-term smokers are not switching quickly enough to lower-risk non-burning nicotine products, the group that could gain the most immediate health benefits from quitting smoking.
According to the report, the research was funded by the US National Cancer Institute and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), with no funding from the vaping industry.
