New York City Mayor Zahran Mamdani has established an office to support efforts to organize private sector workers.
Zahran Mamdani signed an executive order establishing the Mayor’s Office of Workforce.
He says the office will ensure more resources for working-class residents and end exploitative employment practices.
Mamdani said in a statement that the Mayor’s Office of Workforce will ensure workers have a seat at the decision-making table before exploitation becomes a crisis and violations become the norm.
He said that the office will be headed by Tony Pearlstein. During the virtual briefing, Pearlstein said that there are many wealthy employers and corporations in the city who can afford to pay their workers higher wages, and we want to help these workers stand up for their rights and raise their voices.
Mamdani said this is expected to boost Mayor Mamdani’s popularity among the many labor unions that play an important role in city politics.
