As a composer, he has a strong identity across musical genres. Soon after ink played in Toronto International Film FestivalPemberton spoke with What’s On Netflix about his recording process.
Given his wide range of credits, we asked him, what does he always look for in a project or potential outcome? Here is his answer:
“Well, there’s project selection, first and foremost. I always choose projects that allow me to be creative. I generally stay away from franchises or sequels because there’s an expectation there, and that rarely allows for a level of creativity. Sometimes it does, but more often than not I feel like it doesn’t.”
I go where I can be myself, in a way, and not try to pretend to be someone else. I don’t mind trying to pretend to be someone else. This can be fun if you get creative with it.
This changes a lot of the kind of films you make, and it also means that the films you make will become more surprising because people don’t know what to expect. And that’s what I always find exciting about movies: going into a movie and not knowing what it’s going to be like.
What will you watch? What will you experience? How would you feel? When you start working this way, you become more engaged with the project because you are asking these questions yourself.
I have made films where I know exactly what I need to do, and what the audience needs to feel. The audience knows that in advance too, and they’re often not satisfied from a creative standpoint because you know what you’re going to get before you see it.
If you’re thinking about a big superhero movie or anything else, you kind of know what that movie is even before you get into it, generally speaking, and you know how it’s going to feel, what it’s going to look like. When you don’t, it gets interesting.”
