The Himalayan glaciers are melting rapidly and the situation is so dangerous that the availability of water and the employment of millions of people could be seriously threatened.

According to a report, the rate of melting of Himalayan glaciers has increased compared to the last decade.

The report warns that the region could reach a point by the middle of this century where melting glaciers will begin to reduce river flows after peaking, threatening to severely damage populations, agriculture, hydropower and other sectors that depend on these rivers.

According to the report, there are about 40,000 glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalayas, but only 21 glaciers are being regularly monitored on the ground level.

The report states that around 200 glacier-fed lakes in India have been declared dangerous, out of which 56 have been declared as extremely high-risk lakes.

According to the report, accelerated melting of glaciers is increasing the risk of floods, landslides and bursting of glacial lakes, directly threatening populations living in mountainous areas.

In the report, experts also called for an urgent increase in monitoring, early warning systems and disaster preparedness of the Himalayan glaciers, as the impact of the water crisis in the region would not be limited to the mountainous regions but could affect the economy and human life of the entire South Asia.
