Amid growing tensions between Iran and America, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is arriving in China today where he will meet his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.
According to a special report published by the Arab media, this will be the second visit of the Iranian foreign minister to Beijing after the start of the joint war between the US and Israel against Iran at the end of February this year.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, while addressing the BRICS summit in New Delhi, urged the southern countries to play a role in establishing peace in the Middle East conflict.
He said that China is ready to work together with other countries for this purpose.
Meanwhile, Xi Jinping also presented a 4-point plan to reduce tensions, which includes peaceful coexistence, respect for national sovereignty, adherence to international law, and balance between development and security.
According to the opinion of experts included in the Arab media report, China usually avoids direct intervention in such wars, while former Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called Xi Jinping’s statement a timely opportunity to reduce tensions, while Tehran University’s China expert, Hamid Wafai, said that considering him as an offer to mediate between Iran and the United States is more speculation than reality.
Abbas Araqchi’s visit and agenda
Iran’s nuclear program is also expected to be discussed in the meeting between Abbas Araqchi and Wang Yi.
Last week, the United States and its European allies France, Germany and the United Kingdom supported the referral of the Iran issue to the United Nations Security Council through the International Atomic Energy Agency’s board.
According to the report of Arab media, such an action against Iran was last 20 years ago, after which the Security Council passed 6 resolutions against Iran and strict sanctions were imposed.
The US is also increasing economic pressure on Iran and new sanctions have been imposed to further isolate the Iranian government on the world stage, while the naval blockade of Iran’s southern ports continues.
A number of refineries, companies and financial sources linked to China have also been targeted by US sanctions for alleged dealings with Iran, but major Chinese banks have not been directly sanctioned so far.
China is the largest buyer of Iran’s crude oil and has expressed its determination to protect its interests despite US sanctions.
On the other hand, China’s links regarding Iran’s military capabilities have also been discussed in America.
A US newspaper report claims that Iran used highly detailed satellite images obtained from Chinese agencies before the attack on a US military base in Jordan, in which three US soldiers were also killed.
US President Donald Trump did not give much importance to the incident and said that China is basically doing what the US does.
Trump said of Chinese President Xi Jinping that his behavior has been generally appropriate and that just as China spies on the United States, the United States also monitors China.
