Thomas & Friends returns to its 3D roots in a new Netflix special

Mattel is bringing fans back to the Island of Sodor Thomas and Friends: Railroad Storiesan all-new iteration of the beloved preschool franchise that marks a return to its classic 3D roots. The new era begins with a 30-minute special, Really useful enginespremiering on Netflix on September 30, 2026.

Mattel has officially announced a huge creative update just in time for the franchise’s 80th anniversary. Promising to return to the roots of the series, Thomas and Friends: Railroad Stories Features an updated 3D animation style (2D changes for All engines go It divided the fanbase) which blends timeless charm with contemporary appeal, harking back to the authentic train culture and heartfelt stories that made the original show a global phenomenon.

Before the full series is released, Netflix subscribers will get a first look via a 30-minute special titled Really useful engines.

This special reunites classic characters Thomas, Percy and Rosie, and introduces a brand new friend: a crane truck named Deepak. Described as a music-filled adventure featuring three original songs, the story explores the underlying themes of teamwork, cooperation, and what it truly means to be a “really useful” engine.

Parents will be pleased to know that the creative team behind the new show is top-notch. Mattel Studios is an Emmy Award-winning animation studio Brown bag movies (Octonauts, Dr. McStuffins) to bring Sodor back to life. The writing room is led by the supervising lead writer Jill Coza Turnerwho previously served as head writer on the popular PBS Kids series Daniel Tiger Neighborhood.

Who is in the voice cast?

Narrators have always been a staple Thomas and friendsMattel has created some heavy hitters to follow in the footsteps of legends like Sir Ringo Starr and George Carlin.

Henry Golding (Crazy rich Asians, gentlemen) will serve as the narrator in English.
Carla Souza (How to get away with murder) will serve as the narrator in Spanish.

Speaking about taking on the iconic role, Golding said: “We’re bringing a new excitement to the series I grew up loving, and as someone who has always identified with the character of Henry, and literally shares his name, I’m incredibly proud to be part of this new chapter.”

But the biggest surprise comes from the voice of Thomas himself. 13 years old Harry Sparksa newcomer from Hertfordshire, UK, makes his voice acting debut as the iconic Blue Tank Engine. According to the BBCSparks kept the role completely secret from his classmates for nine months, hilariously telling them that he was away attending “physical therapy for a foot injury” whenever he had to go to the recording studio.
